Questions to ask Business Central
Cannot assign new numbers from the number series in Business Central: what it means and how to fix it
The message you see
You cannot assign new numbers from the number series S-INV.
You cannot assign new numbers from the number series S-INV on 01/01/2027.
You cannot assign new numbers from the number series S-INV on a date before 01/01/2026.
What causes it
Business Central couldn’t find a usable line in the number series. The wording tells you which problem it is:
- No date in the message: the series has run out, because the last number used has reached the line’s Ending No.
- “on” a date: no line covers that date, often because next year’s line hasn’t been set up.
- “on a date before”: the document date is earlier than the first line’s Starting Date.
How to fix it in Business Central
- Search for No. Series, find the code in the message and open its Lines.
- Check Starting Date, Ending No. and Last No. Used on each line.
- Add a line with a new starting date and range, or extend the ending number.
- Post again.
The faster way
With Bee Solved, the AI Assistant for Business Central, you ask why the series is stuck.
Why can’t I get a new number from S-INV?
| Line from 01/01/2026 | Ending No. reached |
| Line from 01/01/2027 | None set up |
It reads the series’ lines with your permissions and shows which one is full or missing, with a link to open the series where links are on. It doesn’t change number series. A person does that in Business Central.
Bee Solved works in Claude, ChatGPT or Microsoft 365 Copilot. It signs in as the person asking, uses their Business Central permissions, and links every answer back to the records behind it.
