Questions to ask Business Central

Gen. Bus. Posting Group must have a value in Business Central: what it means and how to fix it

The message you see

Gen. Bus. Posting Group must have a value in Customer: ‘10000’. It cannot be zero or empty.

What causes it

The customer or vendor named has no general business posting group, so Business Central can’t pick the accounts. Usually:

  • It was created by hand or imported without a template, so the field was never filled in.
  • The customer or vendor template used to create it has a blank Gen. Bus. Posting Group, so every new record copies the gap.
  • A document was created before the group was filled in on the card, so its header still has the old, blank value.

How to fix it in Business Central

  1. Open the customer or vendor card named in the message.
  2. On the Invoicing FastTab, fill in Gen. Bus. Posting Group and check the other posting groups.
  3. Fix the template as well, on Customer Templates or Vendor Templates, so new records get the group.
  4. Check the document header shows the group, then post again.
